Hypnosis and managing dental anxiety

Just thinking about having my teeth checked makes me nervous. Is there something other than medication that can help me relax?

We know that many patients have a fear of seeing the dentist. Here are a few tips for keeping anxiety under control:

  • Let us know what makes you feel nervous and we’ll adjust our approach accordingly.
  • Calming music can help soothe or distract you.
  • Before your treatment begins, we can agree on a sign that means you need a break.
  • Therapeutic hypnosis can also help you feel more at ease.

How can hypnosis help?

Clinical hypnosis is used to put you into a trance so that you can relax.  Hypnosis can make you feel a little “spaced out.” You’ll be able to answer questions, but you’ll be lost in your thoughts.

The basic idea behind hypnosis is to get your brain to respond to external stimulus differently. Hypnosis does not mask pain or control you. It simply puts in you a fully relaxed state, making it possible for you to control what you feel.
