Bruxism

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is more commonly known as clenching or grinding your teeth. It’s caused by involuntary contractions of the jaw that cause excessive contact between teeth.

Bruxism usually occurs during sleep, but it can also happen during the day. Tooth grinding is linked with psychological stress or anxiety and it can have a serious impact on your oral health.

Consequences of bruxism

  • Premature wearing of enamel
  • Hot and cold sensitivity
  • Cracked teeth
  • Broken restorations

Available treatments

Bite plates can prevent wear and absorb pressure to provide relief. These custom-made guards prevent your top teeth from coming into contact with the bottom ones.

Other things that can help include good sleep habits, relaxation techniques and consulting with a physiotherapist or osteopath.
